Origin of the cotton candy machine
Cotton candy is candy made from spun sugar. Thin threads of sugar were already made in the 15th century , especially in Italy. In the 18th and 19th centuries, spun sugar also became popular in England. In 1899, the first cotton candy machine was marketed. One of the inventors, William J. Morrison, was a dentist. In the Netherlands, the first cotton candy was made in 1908, at the fair. Nowadays, cotton candy machines are an indispensable part of the Dutch fair and other events.
How a cotton candy machine works
A candy floss machine has a round container with a centrifuge in the middle. The sugar is poured into the machine and then heated. When the centrifuge starts to turn, the sugar is pressed out through small holes. The thin strands do not have time to crystallize because they cool down immediately. This creates long threads that can be wound around a stick. Candy floss from a candy floss machine is white, unless you add food coloring. Pink, blue or yellow is usually chosen.
